🐈 Can My Cat Eat Rice?

Rice is a common ingredient in many commercial cat foods, used as a digestible carbohydrate source and fiber supplement. For cats with temporary digestive issues, a bland diet of plain boiled chicken and white rice (roughly 50/50 ratio) is a vet-recommended home remedy. White rice is preferred over brown rice for cats because it's easier to digest — cats have shorter digestive tracts optimized for processing meat, not complex plant fibers. While rice isn't harmful, it's nutritionally empty for cats — it doesn't contain the protein, taurine, arachidonic acid, or other nutrients cats specifically need. If fed too frequently or in large amounts, rice fills a cat up without providing essential nutrition.

Cook plain white rice in water (no salt, butter, or seasoning). Let it cool to room temperature. Mix a small amount with plain cooked chicken or their regular food. Keep rice to no more than 10-15% of the meal.

For digestive support, plain cooked pumpkin (high in fiber) is an excellent option for cats. For protein-based treats, try small pieces of plain cooked chicken, turkey, or salmon.
