The key distinction with potatoes is raw vs. cooked. Raw potatoes, green potatoes, and potato plants contain solanine and chaconine — toxic glycoalkaloids that can cause vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, lethargy, and in severe cases, neurological symptoms and death. Cooking breaks down most of these toxins, making the potato safe. However, even cooked potato offers very little nutritional value for cats — it's mostly starch and carbohydrates, which obligate carnivores don't need. Mashed potatoes with milk, butter, garlic, or chives are all dangerous for cats due to lactose, excess fat, and toxic allium ingredients. Potato chips, fries, and baked potatoes with toppings should all be avoided.
